Il ritrovo di Rob Shazar is pleased to announce Absence of Water, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Gigi Cifali. These photos are part of an ongoing project, which intend to inform the public and work as an historical archive of derelict lidos and baths in United Kingdom. On a deeper level it aims to express the importance of water, as element of regeneration for the human spirit. Having been built in the late Victorian period, public lidos and baths were at the peak of their popularity in the 1930s. Gradually, living conditions and tastes have changed, resulting in a drop of attendance, leaving the public pools uneconomical to run. Many fell into decay and many were demolished. Symbols of civic and architectural pride in Victorian times, today only a handful of them remain as a representation of bygone era.
A soundtrack, which reproduces rumours and resonances of a pool in activity, will accompany the show. The sound has been recorded in a couple of baths and outdoor pools still open in London. The lively soundtrack, as counterpoint to the vacant and silent photographs displayed will help create a feeling of loss and nostalgia, immersing the spectator in a departed atmosphere.

La galleria Il ritrovo di Rob Shazar è lieta di annunciare l’apertura della prima personale in Italia di Gigi Cifali. L’artista, di origine napoletana ma da anni residente a Londra, presenta Absence of Water.
Una serie di fotografie, parte di un progetto ancora in corso, documentano l’abbandono e la decadenza in cui versano alcuni bagni, piscine e lidi pubblici nel Regno Unito. In auge fino agli anni trenta del secolo scorso, vestigia architettoniche di un glorioso passato, molte piscine sono state demolite ed altre progressivamente abbandonate, rese antieconomiche a causa di un mutamento radicale nelle abitudini e nei gusti dei sudditi di Sua Maestà. Fotografando questi reperti del passato, Cifali mostra l’importanza dell’acqua come elemento di rigenerazione dello spirito umano, ma anche come presupposto indispensabile su cui si fonda l’esistenza di una comunità: “L’acqua non solo sostiene la vita. Disseta. E quando se ne abusa l’uso, può svanire. E con essa evapora anche la vita che la circonda”. La mancanza di un sol fattore, l’acqua, è ciò che ha portato queste strutture alla rovina.
Di fronte all’algida bellezza di queste immagini, al vuoto drammatico che esse manifestano, avvertiamo chiaramente che il Tempo ha compiuto la sua opera. Ma nel farsi rovina, questi lidi diventano essi stessi un archivio della Memoria. Non resta che ricordare allora, immaginando i giorni felici in cui voci allegre di adulti e bambini riempivano la scena di questi luoghi. Una traccia sonora è lì a ricordarci che, in quelle piscine, oggi fatiscenti e decadenti, un tempo pulsava e ruotava la vita della comunità. Il contrasto tra ciò che vediamo e ciò che ascoltiamo crea inevitabilmente un senso di perdita e di nostalgia per un tempo oramai definitivamente andato.

This February, East London photo gallery The Printspace will open its doors for Sample 12, an exhibition showcasing a cross-section of images by photographers and artists who have printed at theprintspace in 2011. Sample 12 is the fifth annual group show of theprintspace clients’ work, the exhibitions are known for showcasing young and fresh work from photographers such as Alan Powdrill, Roberta Ridolfi, Fabio Lattanzi Antinori, Rupert Nightingale and many more.
This year, theprintspace gave everyone who printed with them over the past 12 months the unique opportunity to apply and take part in their group show Sample 12 – and hundreds of photographers submitted their images. The exhibition was compiled by Sample 12 curator, award-winning reportage photographer Toby Smith. “Curating a themed exhibition from such a diverse collection of images was always going to be difficult. Instead, I have picked work that is strong on both technical and aesthetic grounds as single images or diptychs. Dislocated from their context the shots can become even more mysterious and hopefully encourage the audience to track down other works in the same series.” The colourful and exciting show celebrates fantastic photography by talented photographers from around the world, ranging from portrait and landscape to documentary, iPhone and travel photography. theprintspace gallery is excited to present outstanding works by professional and amateur photographers including Oscar Rodriguez, Bernat Millet, Maria Konstanse Bruun, Philip Clarke Hill, Olivier Hess and many more.

Gigi Cifali solo exhibition is the second appointment of Traditeci pure...ma non lasciateci soli (Be unfaithful well ...but don't leave us alone), it's the series of expositions organized by Marconi Gallery for 2011/2012 season.
Thanks to the cooperation with Design? Marconi Gallery arrives to San Benedetto del Tronto and puts on a new space, dedicated to contemporary art which joins the historical one of Cupra Marittima. " Be unfaithful well... but don't leave us alone!" is the title of the project born from the fortunate meeting. The idea is to spread on the regional area the passion for art and design, two worlds often getting close and enjoying to mix. Marconi Gallery so goes on with its art promotion outside its traditional space, trying other spaces besides its usual ones. Design? Associated Study aims to go over the limits of an architectural study in order to become culture promoter and offering so new perspectives to the ones attending its spaces..
Sharing the same criticism for research about visual arts, architecture and design, the cooperation starts a new course of studying and experimentation analyzing and reworking our reality.

"Absence of Water is a project through which Gigi Cifali is documenting the state of decay of some baths, pools and lidos in the United Kingdom.They were places in vogue, fundamental for the life till the thirties of XX Century. With the changing of habits they have been abandoned, often demolished too, because they were becoming uneconomic. The project gives us the possibility to reflect on water: on its function and the importance it has for man and society development and grouth. Water determines the welth, it' s indispensable to live and its lack inexorabily leads to ruin, exactly as happened to these pools. These architectures , trough their charm, show us the time irreversible action, the ruin, the sense of emptiness that surrounds and fills them. La personale di Gigi Cifali è il secondo appuntamento di Traditeci pure… ma non lasciateci soli, la rassegna di mostre che la Galleria Marconi organizza per la stagione 2011/2012.
Grazie alla collaborazione con lo studio Design? la Galleria Marconi sbarca a San Benedetto del Tronto allestendo un nuovo spazio dedicato all'arte Contemporanea che si affianca a quello storico a Cupra Marittima. “Traditeci pure… ma non lasciateci soli!” è il nome del progetto nato dal fortunato incontro.
L’idea è quella di diffondere sul territorio regionale la passione per l’arte e il design, due mondi che spesso si toccano e giocano a dialogare tra loro. La Galleria Marconi continua così la sua operazione di promozione artistica all’esterno del proprio ambiente, sperimentando altri luoghi rispetto a quelli canonici. Design? Studio Associato si propone di superare i limiti di uno studio di architettura per diventare promotore di cultura e offrire nuove prospettive a chi frequenta i suoi spazi.
Accomunati dallo stesso spirito critico di ricerca, applicato alle arti visive, all’architettura e alla progettazione, la collaborazione vuole dare il via ad un nuovo percorso di studio e sperimentazione attraverso l’analisi e la rielaborazione della realtà che ci circonda.

“Absence of Water è un progetto attraverso cui Gigi Cifali sta documentando lo stato di decadenza di alcuni bagni, piscine e lidi pubblici nel Regno Unito. Fino agli anni ’30 del XX secolo essi erano dei luoghi in auge, fondamentali per la vita della comunità. Con il cambio delle abitudini sono stati via via abbandonati, spesso anche demoliti, perché ormai stavano diventando antieconomici. Il progetto ci offre l’opportunità di riflettere sull’acqua: sulla sua funzione e l’importanza che ricopre per lo sviluppo e la crescita dell’uomo e della società. L’acqua determina la ricchezza, è indispensabile per vivere e la sua mancanza porta inesorabilmente alla rovina, esattamente come è accaduto a queste piscine. Queste architetture ci mostrano attraverso il loro fascino l’azione irreversibile del tempo, la rovina, il senso di vuoto che le circonda e le riempie. Eppure esse sono testimonianza e memoria di un’epoca, non troppo lontana, in cui furono luoghi pieni di voci e risa e il centro pulsante della vita della comunità”.

Traditeci pure ci sono tante cose da vedere, l’arte è un fiume che accoglie, raccoglie sedimenta e spande. Guardate le mostre, cercate l’arte, visitate gallerie, musei, luoghi contaminati, senza preconcetti ma anche senza superficialità. L’importante è non farsi ingannare, lealtà e infedeltà camminano spesso insieme. Andate …ma non lasciateci soli.
